The Chairperson,
Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC),
Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change,
Government of India.
Dear Sir,
Sub: Complaint with regard to illegal planting of GM crops in Maharashtra – immediate action required from regulators – reg.
Greetings! It has come to the notice of the Coalition for a GM-Free India, and might have come to the notice of your kind self too, that some illegal planting of GM crops like GM brinjal is being undertaken, in a brazenly challenging manner at that, in Maharashtra. (Ref: https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/agri-business/govt-cannot-stop-the-spread-of-gm-tech-says-maharashtra-farmers-body/article34208581.ece and https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1083302562190703&id=100015329079014). The connection to one faction of Shetkari Sanghatana is also being mentioned in the reports.
We urge the apex regulatory body GEAC to immediately ensure that no such illegal cultivation takes place that too in open violation of the legal regime on the matter. It will be very important for GEAC to take up not just the immediate destruction of the said plots but event-specific testing of the samples collected in each of these cases, to ensure that the seed supply system is traced fully and that the event developers as well as seed suppliers are held liable.
Demanding urgent action in this matter and thanking you,
Sincerely,
Vasant Futane, Kavitha Kuruganti and Yudhvir Singh
